Under 1900-talets början och innan dess levde de flesta invånarna ganska fattigt och inredning var inte något man prioriterade. Hemmen skulle vara varma och trygga, familjen och sängplatser till alla skulle få plats men det var inte så mycket mer. Den lilla andelen av befolkningen som var rik hade förstås resurser till lite större utsvävningar. Men från 1900-talets mitt kan man ana tydligare inredningstrender även hos den vanliga svensken.
1930-talet var en tid då man ville ha ljusa, småmönstrade och enfärgade tapeter i hemmen. Ganska enkel interiör och inte för mycket möbler. Under 1940-talet skulle det vara mer ombonat och hemtrevligt, medan 1950-talet bjöd in mer pastellfärger. Det var under den här tiden som massproduktionen satte igång. Priserna blev lägre, utbudet större och de allra flesta hushåll fick råd att investera i interiören. Stora bokhyllor och barbord var populära inslag, i övrigt skulle man gärna ha många små möbler. 1960-talet inspirerades av den tidens rymdresor och pastellfärgerna var tillbaka. Även popkonsten präglade 60-talet, och i taken hängde gärna plastlampor i många färger. Hobbyrummet gjorde entré och pingisbordet blev ett uppskattat inslag hos många.
Nämner man brunt, grönt och manchester så är det säkert en och annan som vill dra sig till minnes 70-talets glada dagar. Men 70-talet innehöll även en hel del färg och på väggarna satt stora medaljonger eller storblommigt. Golven klädde man i heltäckningsmattor. Under de här åren växte populariteten kring plast, även vid möblemang. När 1980-talet trädde in kom skinnsofforna tillbaka och möblerna skulle vara stora överlag. Ytorna var allra helst glänsande, även glas blev omåttligt populärt och man byggde större fönster och skaffade glasbord. För att inte tala om spegelväggen som fanns hos var och varannan svensk. Under den här tiden var vit en populär färg i inredningssammanhang, något som kommit tillbaka efter millennieskiftet. 1990-talet blev en motsättning från det svartvita på 80-talet. Färgerna kom åter in i svenskarnas hem tillsammans med ek, furu och smidesdetaljer. Det blev populärt med fondvägg och bård på tapeten. Inredningen skulle dock gärna ändå dras mot det ljusa hållet och öppna planlösningar blev allt mer populärt. Köken skulle vara stora och rymliga.
